The Inception of Inspiration

Much has been written about the origin of inspiration and creativity. I see this question often on forums dedicated to creative endeavors. It is both very simple and incredibly difficult to give advice on how to become inspired. On one hand, inspiration can come from so many places that it’s easy to create a list. On the other, different people are inspired by different things, and, while one thing may work at one point, it may not work next time. However, it continues to be an obstacle for many artists and crafters. It is my hope that the following ideas may help those seeking inspiration to discover this centerpiece of creation somewhere unexpected.

  • Use a word, phrase, quote, or even a song. Try to create a piece that embodies it in some way. You can do this in a style as abstract or literal as you wish. If ideas are still not forthcoming, begin by trying to create a piece that represents your chosen words literally. Then, adapt it, in stages, to become more abstract.
  • Look at the work of others. Ideas can flourish by adapting little pieces of others’ work into your own style. Obviously, you do not want to copy. However, even the greatest artists were inspired by those before them.
  • If possible, give a fledgling idea a “face” or a “personality.” For example, if you make plushies or artwork of animals or humans, if they have a face, personality, or expression, you’re likely to care more about it, and work toward solutions, if you encounter a block. Plus, these elements can allow a story for your piece to emerge in your mind, and, thus, the direction of your piece might unfold by itself.
  • Keep a notebook for ideas handy. I don’t know how many times I had an idea when I was out only to have it leave my head by the time I got to my workspace. I can remember that I had a good idea, but I do not remember what it was.
  • Go for a walk, go to the park, get out of your home to people watch. So many people get inspiration from nature and from watching people interact. If you haven’t tried it, it may work for you. Watch from a distance, and give a story to the situations you see. Also, try to allow your mind to rest and wander.
  • Think about what we do NOT know. There is so much about science, religion, social situations, and such that we do not know. Try to come up with your own ideas of what the truth may be. For example, there is still a lot we do not know about deep sea life. Come up with ideas of what you think it might be like in the deep sea. Create based on your ideas.
  • Allow yourself to make mistakes. Try not to allow fear of mistakes to hinder your actions. We all make them. That’s how we learn. Plus, sometimes, something you do not think will work becomes one of your best pieces!

I once read about an author who, when responding to a question about where his inspiration comes from, said that he believes that we all have ideas all the time. Often, we just do not recognize them. Hopefully, the above techniques can help you to tap into this world of undiscovered ideas.
