Based in western Canada, Mia is a prolific artisan and skilled crafter who likes many things from CBC radio to chocolate zucchini bread. Her work can be seen at her large collection of Flickr photos and you can purchase her wares through her Etsy shop called SeeAlso.
How did you get into your craft?
Making things has been a part of my daily life for a long time. I started selling my arts + crafts in late 2006. My mum always encouraged craftiness in our house; I learned to sew and knit at a young age. i went to art school and learned all about printmaking and fibre art and experimenting with ideas. Anything that is repetitive, monotonous, or breeds obsessive behaviour is something I can get into (hence the knitting, printmaking, etc.)
Where does your inspiration come from?
Walking, pattern designs, plants, fancy tea cups, design blogs, bike rides, cabinet
magazine, flea markets, fancy paper, meticulously organized fabric and yarn shops,
natural history books, and studying things carefully to see how they’re made.
How do you promote you work?
Well, the truth is that I don’t do too much promotion. I have my etsy shop, which I try to keep active by adding new items to every few days (at least). i use flickr regularly and try to add my photos to as many groups as possible. I like to make a fresh batch of print gocco’d business cards every once in a while. i put them in with my orders and (occasionally- i’m bad at this part) hand them to people i meet. i did my first 2 craft shows recently and would like to participate in more (and maybe even organize some of my own!) in the future.
