Kristien Hammer

  • Tell me a bit about yourself

My name is Kristien Hammer, I live in Greenville, South Carolina. I’ve been metalworking for 4 years, and just recently found Etsy (seller since April 20). I make all my jewelry in a barn where my studio is in my back yard! I also love other crafts, like felting, making plush things, and crocheting.

  • What is the name of your Shop?

The name of my Etsy Shop is Southern Appalachian Craft Works.

  • Please describe your creative process

My creative process… hmmm… I get inspiration from so many things. Mainly nature, and especially local nature, like mushrooms I see growing in my yard, plants, animals, etc. I got my inspiration for that one from the many rivers and streams we have around here that are the home of these beautiful little fish. Most of my work is sterling silver, but I use copper and brass sometimes as well.

  • How did you get into your craft?

I got into metalworking and jewelry making in highschool. I was fortunate enough to live in a city where a lovely magnet school was available to me to take classes at part of the day called The Fine Arts Center. I took a metals class there and was hooked. A year later my dad was kind enough to set me up with shop supplies for my birthday. I also became interested in jewelry/metalworking from taking frequent trips up to Asheville, NC with my family, to a wonderful place called the Folk Art Center. They sell and show all types of crafts and art from people who are members of the Southern Highland Crafts Guild. I found a particular woman who’s jewelry I loved and was very inspired and impressed by her.

  • Apart from creating things, what do you do?

Apart from creating things, I love to be outdoors! I love to kayak, swim, hike, camp, anything! I also am a student at the College of Charleston, studying marine biology. Luckily, I’m home for the summer! I also love to bake.

  • How do you promote your work?

As far as promoting my work, I’m still working on that! I need promotion badly. I’m trying to promote myself in the forums on Etsy, through word of mouth (with help from email, of course) and by listing new items often.

About Emma
I think that the creativity is a gift that has to have its own freedom, the designs of my jewelry reflect my feelings and emotions, I always try to be dedicated in which I do up to being capable of saying that it is finished and therefore that it is possible to put in exhibition. I'm inspired with the colors of the nature mixed with the feelings and emotions that evoke me.
