Right As Rain Creations

  • Tell me a bit about yourself

My name is Megan, and I live in fresh and green Bellingham, Washington. I am a work-at-home mom to three little ones – two preschool boys and a 4-month old baby girl!

  • What is the name of your Shop?

Right As Rain Creations, named to reflect the fresh natural area I live in – an area that is so beautiful because of the rain we get! Plus, it is a handy play on words of a popular phrase meaning all is as it should be.

  • Please describe your creative process

I do the majority of my hands on product-making after the kids are in bed. This rule came about the day my then-2-year-old lobbed his oatmeal cookie into a batch of lotion I was making. I fished out the cookie, strained the lotion as I poured it and put it in my personal stash. Every time I use it and see a little crumb, I get the giggles.

My basic process is setting out all my ingredients, cleaning my kitchen and utensils for preparation, measuring and heating, pouring, printing labels while waiting for product to set up, and then clean up – my least favorite part! LOL

  • Where do your ideas come from?

I love getting new fragrances, and I love playing with blends. Some of my scents are straight from the bottle, because they smell too good to mess with. Others are ones I’ve blended myself to create something better than each one by itself. The worst is when I blend something spontaneously and forget to write the measurements down.

I am always considering new products to add to my line-up. Because of the time involved in getting the best recipe perfected and testing on friends and family (not to mention family life getting in the way), it takes me a long time to get from conception to a finished and listed item. I have soap and tub truffles in the pipeline. Liquid shampoo has been in the works for months and is probably still a ways out from being finished.

  • How did you get into your craft?

My husband was selling his photography and art at craft shows when we first got married. I noticed that it was really hard to sell anything over $10. I also noticed that there were quite a few soap sellers but hardly any lotion sellers. I researched how to make lotion, thought it sounded like fun (I am an avid lotion user, and really picky about it to boot) and ordered the supplies. It was quite a financial outlay so I decided to make lotion for all our family and friends for their Christmas presents first, hehehe. After they all raved about it, I spent the next year tweaking my recipe and then went “public” at the following holiday craft season.

  • Apart from creating things, what do you do?

Since I spend the majority of my days running after three little ones and my evenings on my feet in the kitchen, my favorite “me” thing to do is lay on the couch and read a book!

  • How do you promote your work?

My best promotional tool is participating in the “SNS” Saturday Night Special posted every Saturday at 5 pm in the promo section of the Etsy forum (and the companion chat in the Etc section). I am just starting to venture into off-Etsy paid advertising, but I am taking it slow. I want sales growth, but not too much too quickly as I still have kids at home and only have so much time! I also have a Blog where I post Etsy seller interviews and other random posts just for funsies!

Right As Rain Creations offer to my readers 15% off in your first purchase if you mention my Blog in the notes to seller section when ordering.
