Gilded Cage Design - An Interview with Robin Sweet
Gilded Cage Design is the work of the very talented artist and designer Robin Sweet.Ms. Sweet’s impressive background combines her education in Clothing Construction and Textile Science with an extensive career in design and merchandising. She as many years of experience in retail merchandising, film and theater styling, costume and set design, as well as art direction.
Robin’s personal creative muse is represented in her line of Victorian inspired accessories and one of a kind artisan dolls. Her work can be seen both on her personal website and her newly created blog.
A keen eye for detail serves Ms. Sweet well as she hand makes all of her works using ribbons, laces and other vintage bits from her collection. The intricate details in each piece make for a bountiful feast for the eye. One could easily add an air of elegance and glamor of olden times with a unique piece from her shop. It seems as if the wearer is donning a piece of history as well as instantly brightening up a look at the same time.
In her own words;
How did you get into your craft?
I have always been an artist. I was born that way. My mother couldn’t keep enough supplies when I was a child. I am a freelance costume designer with degrees in Textile Science and Clothing construction. I only make items that I myself would want to own. And it is from my desire to have beautiful and unique things that I created Gilded Cage Design. My current craft is just part of the evolution process of my creative mind.
Where does your inspiration come from?
My inspiration comes often from strange places, in my dreams, while in my old claw foot tub, during yoga practice. I just let it flow. I am a great lover of history and a lot of my work comes from that. I am over joyed by the quality of items that have stood the test of time and marvel at the craftsmanship of long ago.
How do you promote you work?
Being some what new to this online commerce idea, I promote on indiepublic, my own website Gilded Cage Design, Etsy, Flickr. I do private shows for a loyal clientele and a great deal of charity auction donations.
