Melody’s Interview

• What is your name
Melody and I live in Sunny Southern California.

• What is the name of your Shop?
My Etsy Shop is “Mtheorie” and evokes my love of science while throwing in the initial of my first name, Melody. Who knows, maybe that mysterious “M” really stood for my name in the first place!

Please describe your creative process

I usually paint late at night when I get a chance at complete quiet without my jumble of art supplies being interrupted by other things to do. I work in pencil, charcoal, conte, acrylics, gouache, and other things that come along on paper, board, and canvas. Being in the middle of a glorious mess of art supplies I won’t stop a work until I’m finished (or someone physically pulls me away for lunch!).

What inspires you?
My ideas and inspirations come all day long from reading, imagining, and observing. I check far too many websites for news on science, art, business, politics, and anything I can get my hands on. I’m sure someone out there would think I’m addicted.
I find science particularly inspiring because it’s always asking questions and art does the same but through different means. Also, there’s a beauty in all these forms and ideas in science. I can appreciate an apple and the structure of its flesh, its flavor, how it is that I’m able to see it, how it’s held down, the disease it might carry, and on and on.

How did you get into your craft?
I got into art by trying to imitate my father, who would challenge me to copy his drawings when I was a kid. It’s something that stuck with me and I continued to keep my feet wet in art until I jumped in head first during college.

Apart from creating things, what do you do?
I’m a full time university student studying Art History, which means I can usually be found buried in papers and books. Travelling is also a major part of my life. With my fiancé I walk, camp, and taste my way across the US and Canada.

How do you promote your work?
I promote my work by word of mouth, on Etsy and its forums, and by sharing a business card whenever I can!
